On the foothills of the North Carolina mountains, a young Dr. Keith Chaffin developed a love for animals by the age of four. "My first pet was an English setter bird dog named Mabel," he recalls. "She was my first animal love. From there, I learned toappreciate all types of animals, ranging from cows to horses to dogs to birds to wildlife. I really appreciated them all and found them fascinating.”By high school, young Dr. Chaffin recognized his fascination with science and considered medical school, but his love for animals was much stronger. In 1981, he earned his Bachelor of Science in zoology from North Carolina State University (NCSU). The same year, he returned to NCSU to begin studies at the brand-new School of Veterinary Medicine.
