In this issue of Neuron, Oganian et al.1 performed intracranial recordings in the auditory cortex of human sub-jects to clarify how vowels are encoded by the brain. Formant-based tuning curves demonstrated the orga-nization of vowel encoding. The need for population codes and demonstration of speaker normalization were emphasized.
