The U.S. Air Force is starting to phase out the Raytheon T-1A Jayhawk trainer and going all in on a new training process for mobility pilots that is heavy on simulators instead of seat time in a multiengine trainer. Since the early 1990s, the T-1A, a modified Beechcraft 400A, has been the undergraduate pilot training platform for pilots who are destined for refueling tankers, airlifters and other larger aircraft, including big-wing reconnaissance and certain special operations platforms. However, in the services new budget request the Air Force wants to start phasing out the jets, beginning with cutting 50 of the fleet of 178 in 2023.
