YOUR AIRMEN CERTIFICATE has been lost, stolen, or destroyed. Now what? You could go through the process of requesting a replacement via the mail, and in four to six weeks you might have that new certificate in hand. Or you can request a replacement via the FAA's Airmen Certification Online Services website and have it in hand in seven to 10 days. I know which one I would prefer. Either option will cost you $2. You will need to know your certificate number when registering for the site, which can be tough if you no longer have your certificate. My advice is to go sign up now so you'll have an account already established if you ever need it. At the same time you're ordering a replacement certificate you can also request a "temporary authority to exercise privileges." That's a temporary certificate emailed to you, allowing you to fly while you wait for your new one to arrive. The website also allows you to update your mailing address with the FAA and stay legal with the requirements of FAR 61.60. You only have 30 days to do so, so time is of the essence.
