Japan has about 150-600 species of native bamboo (source: Wikipedia and depending on the definition). Take species common in western Japan, where I live, include the big three: Moso (Phyllostachys edulis), Hachiku (Phyllostachys nigra 'Henonis'), andMadake (Phyllostachys hambus aides). New shoots grow from the rhizomes from February to April. The new take shoots are called 'takenoko', which means take's baby and is a seasonal vegetable in Japan.
