As the Arctic region grows more important to NATO and Russia becomes more aggressive toward Europe, Norway's new center-left government has outlined a plan to strengthen its military: continue the growing investment in key aircraft and air defenses while operating more closely with allies, especially the U.S. Norwegian officials say the spending-on key systems such as the Lockheed Martin F-35 and its native Kongsberg Joint Strike Missile (JSM) as well as new submarines, multiple helicopter fleets and submarine-hunting aircraft-is required to counter Russia and strengthen homeland defense. The government in October published its new platform, hammered out by the Labor and Center parties in the village of Hurdal, with a particular focus on the bases, aircraft and defenses in the country's north. The government also is creating a commission to outline the future of the Norwegian military.
