In 1959, Long Island businessman Helmuth Waldorf, a German tool and die-maker's apprentice who emigrated to the U.S., started a small defense electronics company named Instrument Systems Corp., or ISC. Two years later, ISC bought Telephonies, at the time considered one of Long Island's aviation electronics pioneers, partly based on World War Ⅱ contracts to provide the U.S. military with headphones and microphones. Thanks to Telephonies, ISC would go on to be a renowned defense electronics supplier during the Cold War and beyond. Then last fall, current corporate owner Griffon announced that Waldorf's masterstroke would be written out of the picture in a deal expected to close this quarter.
