During the first half of 2020, about 32m tonnes of primary aluminium were produced. Global aluminium production for this year is forecast to be more than 64m tonnes. However, the aluminium demand is forecast to fall 7.1 in 2020, instead of a previous estimate of a 2.7 decline. This will total a demand of 59.89m tonnes, a decrease of 7 on 2019 figures. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, demand for the light metal from Europe will undergo the largest year-on-year drop - down by 12.7 - followed by North America with a 9.3 decline. Meanwhile, Chinese demand will fall 5.4 in 2020. On that basis, the global refined aluminium market forecasts a surplus to expand to 4m tonnes for 2020, from the 2.7m tonnes previously predicted.
