The Government's planning guidance issued in the early 2010s strongly advocated the principle of sustainable development. Both NPSE in 2010 and NPPF in 2012 required acoustic impacts to be considered within the broader context of their impact on other potential sustainability issues. This had significant implications for how planning conditions relating to acoustics should be derived and implemented. However, this guidance appears to be far from universally understood and has been slow to be adopted across the country.
