Newly unveiled draft guidance developed by the Federal Aviation Administration positions several competencies often treated as independent, including pilot monitoring and managing automated systems, into a unifying framework that emphasizes their inseparable roles in safe flight operations. While the concept may sound like common sense, codifying a set of competencies under the umbrella of flightpath management (FPM) is seen as an important milestone that builds on more than two decades of work. The 43-page advisory circular (AC)-tentatively titled Flightpath Management-includes an overview chapter on FPM, which it defines as "the planning, execution and assurance of the guidance and control of aircraft trajectory and energy, in flight or on the ground." It also has detailed chapters on FPM's four primary, "interlinking" components: manual flight operations, managing automated systems, pilot monitoring and energy management.
