The Japanese Circulation Society (JCS) was inauguratedin 1935 by Dr. Toshikazu Mashimo at theformer Kyoto Imperial University (now KyotoUniversity) with the publication of a bulletin describingcirculation studies. On the first page of the first issue of theofficial journal, later known as the Japanese CirculationJournal, the founder’s enthusiasm was expressed througha statement entitled “Our Mission”. The mission of theSociety was not only to publish scientific papers or holdscientific meetings, but also to encourage and support youngphysicians, promote research on cardiovascular disease(CVD), and work towards its prevention. In addition, themission emphasized the importance of passing on newknowledge in cardiology to general physicians. The statementconcluded by saying that the accomplishment of themission would not only benefit members of the JCS, butalso bring happiness to society as a whole. This mission,full of the passion of the founders, has been passed on overthe decades and the JCS has accomplished much in itscontinual efforts to promote science and medicine, develophuman resources, and improve public health over the past86 years.
