摘要

Abstract Zooplankton contribute to nitrogen regeneration for primary productivity via ammonium excretion. To improve our understanding of the biogeochemical role of zooplankton in the Southern Ocean, ammonium excretion rates (AERs) were determined for two major euphausiid species (Euphausia superba and E. crystallorophias) off Adélie Land, East Antarctica, during the austral summer of 2008. AER on a dry weight basis (weight-specific rate) for E. superba and E. crystallorophias was 2.5?±?0.6?×?10?3 and 2.2?±?1.0?×?10?3?μmol?N?mg DW?1?h?1 (mean?±?standard deviation), respectively. Using the abundances of the two euphausiid species estimated by an acoustic survey with a scientific echosounder, areal daily AER along the observational transect was estimated to be 0.08–23.10?mmol?N?m?2 day?1 for E. superba and 0.01–40.89?mmol?N?m?2 day?1 for E. crystallorophias. Contributions of the daily AERs of E. superba and E. crystallorophias to the ambient ammonium stock in the 20–200?m depth layer accounted for 0.14–40.12 and 0.02–44.71, respectively. Although the median of the contribution was significantly higher in E. superba, our data imply non-negligible contributions of E. crystallorophias to ammonia concentrations when they are distributed with higher abundance in the neritic zone, which is comparable to E. superba in slope zones. To evaluate entire nutrient cycles in the Southern Ocean ecosystem, information on the life history, distribution and abundance of E. crystallorophias should be key data.
