While 28 years might seem far off, a report in March from an investor-led group called Climate Action 100+ states that aviation "emissions need to have peaked by 2025, and by 2030 need to be 23 lower than in 2019."To accomplish this, the group suggests that use of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) needs to vastly increase, and air travel should be curtailed. While SAF will help the industry, it's not a panacea, and its ramp-up will not happen overnight. Moreover, it's hard to imagine that the aviation industry will want to limit travel. The Climate Aviation 100+ group's report also advocates pushing aviation companies to "shift their focus from carbon offsetting to the reduction of their own emissions" to align with the International Energy Agency's 1.5C (or net-zero by 2050) goal. While airlines will face the brunt of the scrutiny, the MRO industry is a crucial part of airline supply chains and so will fall under operators' Scope 3 emissions calculations.
