We propose a novel distributed-torsion-sensing technique that uses a commercially available four-fiber ribbon as a torsion sensor for the first time. The proposed technique determines twist rate applied to the four-fiber ribbon from strain difference between the outer and inner fibers in the four-fiber ribbon. We establish a theoretical model of the measurement principle and describe the basic idea of the proposed technique. The model is validated by a comparison with experimental results. On the basis of the model, the potential of the proposed technique is confirmed. Considering measurement accuracy of the latest commercial instruments for measuring fiber strain, we clarified that the proposed technique can measure twist rate of over 0.20 rad/m.
