摘要

We believe that immature and developing research ideas are valuable to be published and shared in public because these can be further matured and developed within scientific communities. However, the conventional formats of scientific articles (original articles and review-type ones) and the peer-review process naturally expect the maturity of research ideas and questions and the completion of the whole story in a single article, which slows down the process of idea sharing and then undermines the power of collective intelligence in scientific communities. To challenge this situation, a new type of scientific article, "Idea Paper," was proposed at the annual meeting of the Ecological Society of Japan in 2018, which aims to promote the sharing of research ideas. The first six prestigious idea papers were published in Ecological Research in 2020 (Chou Nakazawa, 2020; Denis et al., 2020; Doi, 2020; Hayashi Tsurui-Sato, 2020; Nakadai, 2020; Ushio, 2020). Now we observe that this new framework contributes to scientific advances as well as recently emerging frameworks, for example, data papers, method papers, and registered reports. The manuscript format of idea papers is designed for making it easy for readers to compare the similarity and dissimilarity of a proposed idea with existing ideas and to critically judge the novelty and significance of the proposed idea. To help reviewers quickly and objectively evaluate the proposed ideas, a reviewer's checklist has also been developed. One may argue that casual small-group talks at "coffee break" or the bar are enough for sharing such immature ideas. But the global COVID-19 pandemic took away many opportunities for daily communication and it is also notable that the "coffee break" culture in academia has not been so common in some countries for a long time. In this era of open science, there is no reason to keep research ideas secret within a single laboratory. For more details you can refer to the summary document (the preface of the special feature "Promoting idea sharing via Idea Paper," Miki et al., 2020).
