Silkfabric was chemically treated to introduce bulkiness. The chemically treated silk fabrics were studied for the retention of characteristics after degumming. Using the Box-behnken method experimental design, 15 different combinations were formed to standardize the process variables viz., chemical treatment temperatures, durations and chemical concentrations. The bulky silk fabric thus produced were degummed and characterized for various physical, mechanical and comfort properties using standard testing procedures. The results indicated that the fabric density and weight, flexural rigidity and tensile characteristics and shrinkage were found to have significant influence on the temperature and duration of the treatment and concentration of chemical. The study indicated that using the chemical treatment the bivoltine silk fabric can be imparted bulkiness using chemical treatment and the same was retained even after degumming..
