North American and European aerospace manufacturers are beginning to look in earnest to hire for the expected commercial aviation recovery, with industry leaders now trumpeting plans to bring on tens of thousands of employees. But with memories still fresh of large layoffs early in the COVID-19 pandemic-on top of the industry's long-term consolidation-companies will have to face down long-standing trust and attractiveness issues, especially when recruiting younger workers. "We are losing the influencers ... because they don't trust us," U.S. Marine Corps Maj. Gen. (ret.) Charles Bolden, Jr., a former NASA administrator, said during a panel discussion at the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) SciTech Forum and Exposition in early January.
