November 28th 2022. International comparison. Australia has one of the highest levels of car ownership in the world, reflecting high disposable incomes, a large land area and a dearth of public transport. At an estimated 621 cars per 1,000 people in 2022, the car stock is comparable to that of New Zealand and higher than in the UK and Germany. However, car ownership has been declining since 2016, when it stood at 679 cars per 1,000, owing to the ongoing switch to SUVs and pick-up trucks. We expect the declining trend to continue, with the rate slipping to 574 per 1,000 by 2027. Strong population growth averaging about 1 per year over the next five years, largely owing to immigration from Asia, will contribute to the decline in the ownership rate.
