With the selection of Collins Aerospace and Axiom Space to develop next-generation spacesuits, NASA reaffirms its commitment to parlay public-private partnerships into essential hardware and services for the country's deep-space human exploration initiative. The procurement strategy has proven successful in low Earth orbit, with privately owned and operated supply ships and crew transports regularly flying to the International Space Station (ISS). Next year, a third U.S. cargo ship, operated by Sierra Space, is expected to join the fleet operated by SpaceX and Northrop Grumman. Also in 2023, Boeing aims to join SpaceX in ferrying crew to and from the ISS.NASA chose SpaceX again for a human lunar landing system, putting the company on the critical path for the targeted 2025 Artemis Ⅲ mission, which will be the first crewed landing on the Moon since Apollo 17 touched down in December 1972. NASA plans to release a partnership solicitation this summer for a second lunar landing system.
