AS THE PRIMARY HUMAN INTERFACE TO TECHNOLOGY, inventions and innovations in displays historically have heralded new form factors and usages for electronic devices. The advent of flat-panel displays enabled the now ubiquitous low-profile large-screen televisions and desktop monitors, mobile devices such as smartphones and laptops, wearable devices such as smart watches and fitness trackers, large signage displays, e-readers, interactive screens in modern cars, and emerging virtual and augmented reality (VR/AR) devices. Accordingly, we have seen a strong, enduring interest in making flexible displays that could enable a new array of devices.1,2 Rollable displays could pave the way for mobile devices with large visual screens that the user can roll back into a compact shape after viewing the content. If such displays can be made into reliable products for long-term use, this would allow system architects and designers the flexibility to envision a new family of devices with innovative applications.
