The Latest: Sega has agreed to acquire games developer-publisher Rovio for approximately EUR706mn (USD775mn) in a deal that should close in September 2023. The take-over will help Sega accelerate its move into the mobile gaming and games-as-aservice fields, while Rovio will be able to transition its popular Angry Birds intellectual property to non-mobile platforms. Implications: The offer, which represents a 19 premium to Rovio's share price prior to the announcement, is likely to face no opposition from Rovio shareholders and management as the games developer has struggled to diversify beyond its pivotal Angry Birds IP and even recent iterations of the property have lacked the longevity and engagement rates of the original games. Becoming part of the Sega group will allow its developers to work on a broader range of titles as well as porting the Angry Birds concept to the console and arcade gaming markets.
