China Three Gorges Corporation (CTG) has begun construction of a new pumped-storage project which the company says will feature the world's highest hydraulic head. CTG has not yet released precise details of the planned hydraulic head. The Tiantai pumped-storage scheme, in Tiantai County, Zhejiang Province, will be equipped with four 425 MW reversible units, with a total installed capacity of 1700 MW, CTG announced in early January. It is part of the 'Medium and Long-term Development Plan for Pumped Storage (2021-2035)' included in the 14th Five-Year Plan. On completion, the station will mainly provide peak load regulation, valley filling, frequency regulation, phase modulation, power storage, and emergency use for Zhejiang's power grid, and provide flexible dispatching capacity for the East China Grid. CTG expects the plant to generate annual output of 1.7 TWh, reducing coal consumption by about 520 000 t and reducing CO_2 emissions by an estimated 1.04 × 10~6 t for Zhejiang's power grid.
