Aerospace and defense executives and industry advisors see a bittersweet year ahead in 2023. The anxiously awaited recovery in aerospace and defense manufacturing will be well underway-but few will feel relief, and some might not survive to see it through.The agenda for original equipment manufacturers (OEM), defense prime contractors and suppliers alike in 2023 is clear: Play defense on inflation, narrow workforce gaps and deliver products on time to customers. But with industry still struggling through the two-year gap in production triggered by COVID-19, the added challenges come as the financial outlook is weakening in the subtiers."While the passing of the worst of the crisis and rising production should give suppliers reason to celebrate, 2023 is not going to be easy," says Matteo Peraldo, a director at consulting group AlixPartners. "A combination of macroeconomic concerns and emerging industry challenges threaten aerospace companies amid higher debt levels, weakened balance sheets and overall vulnerability."
