After years of startup space-launch companies rocketing to fame and possible fortune and the communication satellite market increasingly dominated by big brands, entrepreneur and investor attention is turning to other new-space segments. Chief among them is satellite-based Earth observation. While venture capitalists, analysts and consultants predict a dropoff in the number of rocket companies, Earth-observation satellite businesses remain on an upswing. That is thanks to continued investor interest, a fragmented and exploitable marketplace and rising government and commercial demand for satellite-based services for everything from climate change response to national security.
