RIVIAN and Polestar's plan is brave and bold, but not unusual. Why brave and bold? Well, one obstacle to emissions reduction is the difficulty of transitioning to more environmentally friendly technologies. EVs are still in the early stages of development in relation to the overall lifetime of the car industry, which started in the 1800s, and there are still many challenges to overcome in terms of infrastructure, cost and consumer education. In addition, many car makers - focused on short-term financial results - are heavily invested in combustion-engined vehicles, and making a switch to greener technology requires significant investment. This is where Rivian and Polestar differ from the legacy manufacturers such as Toyota and VW.
