An optimal performing sow is essential for as well the technical as economical performance of abreeder farm. Besides management, health, housing and climate, the sow feeding program has a distinct influence on this performance. Traditionally sows werefed a universal sow feed, which was supplied during the gestation and the lactation period. The nutritional requirements of gestating and lactating sows differ considerably however. The approximate daily requirements of some major ingredients are shownin Table 1.
