摘要

By general agreement, one of the highlights of the International Pig Veterinary Society (IPVS) Congress held this year in Bologna, Italy, had no direct reference to health at all. It was instead a detailed examination of the biological basis for new recommendations on feeding the breeding sow and gilt. Dr. Frank Aherne, a member of the University of Alberta team in Canada which produced the IPVS presentation, summarized its central message when he said that we should stop talking about general nutritional standards and start looking at the individual animal's metabolic state. The question is always, does a certain way of feeding upset the metabolism of the sow in terms of the hormones and other chemical messengers her body produces.
