MANY people believed that the arrival of the C-Charge in London would spark a mass rollout of similar schemes elsewhere. But it hasn't turned out like that. There's a limited C-Charge in Durham that actually precedes the capital's, but it only applies to a very small area on the Durham Peninsula and is currently pegged at £2. Of more significance are Cambridge's ongoing plans to introduce a London-style charge (£5 a day) for motorists to enter its centre to raise funds for a sustainable bus network. A recent consultation on the matter attracted 27,000 responses, demonstrating the strong opinions schemes such as this provoke.
