Ballota acetabulosa (L.) Benth. (Lamiaceae) is a compact evergreen shrub that grows to large populations in areas with dry, poor soil and rocky areas of south-eastern Greece and western Turkey. It has upright growth, gray-green snowy foliage, blooming with pink-purple flowers in spring (May-July). With the ultimate aim of exploiting B. acetabulosa as an ornamental plant for urban and suburban landscape, with emphasis to green roofs and restorations of landscapes, such as archeological sites, the clonal propagation of the species was investigated. Cuttings from the apical part of shoots, 15 cm long, were collected from wild plants of West Attika-Greece, in spring (March), summer (August), autumn (October) and winter (January) 2013 and 2014. The bases of the cuttings were immersed either in rooting powder containing indole butyric acid (IBA) for herbaceous/softwood or hard wood cuttings (0.066 or 0.2 w/w IBA in talcum, respectively), or in IBA ethanol-water (1:1, v/v) solutions, at concentrations of 0 (control), 1000, 2000 or 3000 mg L~(-1), for two dipping times, 1 or 5 min. Then they were set for rooting on a mix of peat: perlite (1:1, v/v), in a mist system for two weeks and then on a heated-glasshouse bench for further six weeks. The rooting of cuttings was affected by both season and concentration and application method of rooting hormone. Most effective rooting was achieved in spring, after treatment with 2000 or 3000 mg L~(-1) IBA solution for 1 min (88-98), as well as in autumn, after treatment with 2000 mg L~(-1) IBA solution for 5 min (83). Summer was the most inappropriate season for rooting cuttings, with the rooting rate not exceeding 30. Regarding the use of IBA rooting powder, that for hard wood cuttings was more effective (rooting rates varied from 25 to 52) than that for herbaceous/softwood cuttings (rooting rates less than 25), in all seasons.
