Over the past 25 years, archaeologists have found hundreds of abstract shapes, animals and anthropomorphs that were carved into the ceiling of a northern Alabama cave by Native Americans more than a millennium ago, But only recently did new 3D imaging techniques reveal this humanlike figure and four other creations, all too faint to be noticed by the naked eye and hidden among other carvings, according to an analysis published in Antiquity in May 2022. Each spanning between 3 and 11 feet, these immense impressions measure up to form the largest cave art in all of North America.
