Ecuador's state power utility, Corporation Electrica del Ecuador (CEL-EC), in coordination with the Ministry of Energy and Non-Renewable Natural Resources and the National Electricity Operator, announced on 15 December that it had started synchronization tests of the first of three units at the 49 MW Sarapullo hydro plant. Sarapullo will operate with three 16.3 MW Francis units, with runner diameters of 1650 mm, under a head of 133.5 m. It is the first of three plants being developed by CELEC as part of the 254 MW Toachi Pilaton hydroelectric complex, in partnership with Russia's Inter RAO Export.
