The correct measurement of the profile temperature is a prerequisite for the control of the optimum extrusion speed and therefore for the efficiency of the plant when extruding aluminium. A sporadic contact measurement by means of a penetration probe is to be considered unsuitable for dynamic control. Therefore, pyrometers are used for this measuring task, which record the heat radiation of the profile at the press exit in milliseconds and from a safe distance. Because of the special radiation properties of aluminium, standard pyrometers can only be used to a limited extent. In order to achieve reliable measured values even when producing profiles with different alloys and surfaces, Keller ITS developed an extended emissivity ratio algorithm, shortly called EERC. The report shows the limits of previous measuring methods and explains the function and advantages of the new EERC algorithm.
