In February 2022, NHS Digital published survival rates for different cancers diagnosed in England between 2015 and 2019. As typical, they reported the outcomes from cancers across multiple organs according to demographics, such as age, gender, stage at diagnosis and geography, in patients followed up for at least 1 year. However, for the first time, this report also included cancer survival according to the Index of Multiple Deprivation (IMD). The IMD is a nine-point-scale, commonly used measure of relative social deprivation, derived from local rates of income, employment, education, crime and housing, which are then used to weight the score accordingly. The IMD is allocated using English postcodes and grouped into quintiles, with IMD Category 1 being the most socially deprived.
