Spain's grid operator Red Electrica de Espana (REE) plans to begin construction of the 200 MW (3.2 GWh/year) Salto de Chira pumped-storage plant on the island of Gran Canaria, after being granted consent by the Canary Islands' Ministry of Environment. The General Directorate of Energy of the Ministry of Ecological Transition, Fight against Climate Change and Territorial Planning of the Government of the Canary Islands issued the administrative authorization for the project in mid-December, which allows the first major energy storage project in the Canary Islands to move ahead. This follows a declaration of common interest for the project on 25 November by the Government of the Canary Islands and of a decree for the implementation of the scheme.
