Loan availability: Alaska's six community development quota organizations have a huge new line of credit, courtesy of the federal government.The National Marine Fisheries Service announced March 28 it would accept loan applications from the CDQ companies totaling up to $197 million for "fisheries-related projects."Created in 1992, the CDQ program carves out lucrative shares of Bering Sea and Aleutian Islands pollock, crab, and other fish for the benefit of often disadvantaged Western Alaska villages. The CDQ companies each represent a group of villages, and some have become major industry players.
