The 2022 Mordica Memorial Award recipient discusses the effects of processing variables that have significant impact on quality and performance of steel wires, with two case studies that focus on how elements in iron-carbon alloy contribute to a wire's behavior. While processing variables have significant impact on quality and performance of wires, a robust solution to many of these issues can be found in steel chemistry. Each of the elements in iron-carbon alloy have a contribution to wire's behavior. This paper reviews some of the effects of these elements in practical situations.
