摘要

To monitor a process with a control chart, initially the unknown in-control parameters are to be estimated from Phase I retrospective analysis. The parameters obtained are then used for designing control charts in Phase-ll to monitor the process for early detection of the out-of-control state. Parameter estimation errors in Phase I can have adverse effects in Phase-II monitoring. Most studies available have concentrated on theoretical sampling distributions of parameters under the assumption the Phase-I data is free from contamination. There are few studies that have considered the effects of contaminated samples in Phase-I and considered robust estimators (Ref. 1). (Ref. 1) estimates the mean squared error of parameters to provide recommendations for practitioners. When the mean of all observations change, then 3-sigma control limits are preferred; when some of the samples have this contamination, 2-sigma control limits are preferred (Ref. 1). However, these studies have not considered the effects of estimation errors in Phase-I on the Phase-II control chart. This study evaluates the impact on Phase-II implementation by providing different levels of contamination and their effects on the width of control limits with six different estimators considered for standard deviation. The study also provides recommendations for designing Phase-I control charts to achieve the expected monitoring performance. (27 refs.).
