We are delighted to bring you this issue of Journal of Airport Management which begins with a highly topical paper by a team of authors led by Tony Caccavone, Surface Access Director at Heathrow Airport. Their paper provides a detailed investigation into how the airport is transforming how passengers and staff travel to and from the airport by surface transport modes of access, with the key objective of promoting sustainability and decarbonisation. The authors explore the scale of surface access challenges, the targets in place to tackle them and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, highlighting how infrastructure and pol icy guidelines have been adapted in order to recognise this new reality. The authors make a well researched and logical case as to how they intend to achieve these goals using a combination of infrastructure enhancements, social conscience awareness, regulatory and managerial strategies. They also recognise the various strategic and critical physical, human, governmental, financial and managerial elements that must be balanced in order for their programme to succeed. Jeff Lennon, Vice President Stra tegic Sales Global Partnerships at Vision-Box, scrutinises the critical role of non aeronautical revenue in main taining airports' financial health in the post COVID-19 era. With the need to adopt new methodologies that arc more in line with public expectations and legal requirements for health, sanitisation and safety, this puts the onus on stakeholders to transform digitally, and to adopt key data-based technologies that combine biometric and biographic data capture, automation and a digital identity man agement platform.
