The 2160 MW Tocoma scheme, now well under way in Venezuela, is the fourth and final major hydro scheme on the Lower Caroni river. This paper, based on a presentation for HYDRO 2006 in Porto Carras, discusses the lessons learned during the design and planning of the project, including preparation of the dam site, the design of the principal structures, and the role of the powerplant for Venezuela's national grid.
