I am questioning the "future cervical cancer prevention" suggested by Drs. Schiffman and Wentzensen of the National Cancer Institute.1 Their four recommendations, quoted in italics below, are unlikely to be effective in the United States for the reasons that follow. 1. "...prophylactic vaccination of adolescents against carcinogenic HPV infections..." The current human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccines are shown to be effective against infection by HPV16 and 18, and perhaps 31 and 45. However, based on two recent publications,2-3 HPV52 was found to be the most prevalent "carcinogenic" genotype infecting young American women.
