AbstractThe results of this study offer hypotheses concerning the interplay of psychological factors and chronic somatic illness. Leads for further research include examination of the psychological effects of prolonged immobilization and the differential response of arthritic children to immobilization. Another avenue for study involved the attitudes of the children and their families to chronic illness and the relationship of these attitudes to treatment response. These and other leads emerging from this pilot study will now be pursued in a larger and more systematic research program employing an appropriate control group.
