Two weeks after returning from Iwo Jima in 1945, I entered another unfamiliar place - the elevator industry. My first installation as a helper was that of a Sedgwick Roto-waiter, self-supported in the hoistway by its accompanying lightweight steel framework and driven by an endless chain that eliminated overtravel. The second was a Shepard Homelift, also with a similar framework that supported the overhead winding machine. I couldn't be faulted for thinking at the time, "This elevator fieldwork is much like assembling a large Erector Set~reg;! How fortunate to be in a business where 'packages' are sold and easily fitted together in a comfortable setting!"
