The design and operating characteristics of a unique reproducible linear, highhyphen;density (gsim;1019eminus;/cm3), lowhyphen;temperature (17Te30 eV) heliumZhyphen;pinch are presented in this paper. It is shown that the temperature and critical density scale length (70ndash;200 mgr;m) of the pinched plasma are favorable for simulating CO2laserhyphen;pellet experiments. Focused CO2laser intensities of 1012W/cm2result inv0/vthsime;2.8 at the critical layer, wherev0is the quiver velocity of an electron in the laser electric field andvthis the electron thermal velocity.
