AbstractThis paper describes a comprehensive experimental investigation of the fire performance of nailed gusset connections between large glue‐laminated timber members. Both plywood and steel gusset plates were investigated with a range of loaded and unloaded test methods. The principal conclusions are that unprotected gussets have poor fire performance, but that a layer of solid wood or gypsum plasterboard will provide at least one hour of fire protection to typical joint
