The US market for imported yarn is flat. Continued pressure from imported apparel on domestic production and the resulting lower demand for fabric domestically are responsible for stagnant imports. In value, yarn imports increased in January-September by 5.3 to US$ 1,855 million, but the quantity gained only 1.5 to 479,188,000 kilograms. The difference represents a 3.8 increase per kilogram due to currency appreciation against the dollar. Yarn imports were helped by slightly higher US fabric exports. Knit fabric exports gained 15.0 to 220.2 million kilograms, while woven fabric exports were essentially unchanged at 1,077 million m~2. Synthetic filament yarn (HS 5402) dominates US imports, supplying 54.0 of yarn import value and 57.6 of quantity imported. The value of HS 5402 imports climbed by 17.3 to $1,002 million, but by only 6.8 in weight to 275,926,000 kilograms, resulting in a 9.7 increase in the average price per kilogram. Overall, imports of yarns classified under HS 5401-HS 5406, artificial and synthetic filament yarns, increased by 8.0 to 296, 105,000 kilos.
