For decades, most people did not choose to fly a Chinese airline without a feeling of trepidation. From the foundation of the People's Republic of China in 1949, everything related to non-military aviation-from airlines to airports to air traffic control-was conducted by the state's CAAC (Civil Aviation Administration of China). And booking a flight-particularly on a domestic route-would lead to the passenger wondering: 'Will it operate? What sort of stories will I be able to tell after this experience?' And, 'Will I even make it to be able to tell those stories?'
