Winter in August? Snow and blizzards in August? Of course not! There's no way to explain the sudden jump in natural gas prices to over $3/MMBtu in August either. August is usually a "shoulder" month where prices are moderate or run in the middle of the range for the year. This time, natural gas prices shot up like a rocket. Prices dropped somewhat later in the month but were still in the $2.50-2.80 range. The best reason for the rising prices seems to be a sudden—be it real or perceived—demand or need for gas because of drastic climatic changes.
