Constructed wetlands provide good removals of BOD, COD, suspendedsolids, heavy metals, and pathogens from wastewaters being treated inthem. However, although they are widely used in cold climates, winteroperability often Presents problems, and they normally only removepart of nitrogen and Hosphorus nutrients in wastewaters being treatedin them. What is needed was a New type of constructed wetland whichremoves nutrients as well as it does other Contaminants, whichoperates better in cold weather, and which is able to handleEspecially difficult-to-treat wastewater.
