The acid hydrolysis of aqueous solutions of dentifrice grade sodium monofluorophosphate has been studied in 0.5, 1.0 and 2.0 M HCl. In 0.5 M HCl, hydrolysis appeared to be pseudo-first order with similar F- and orthophosphate release. At higher acid concentrations the hydrolysis was of a higher reaction order with apparently more orthophosphate release than fluoride. Suggestions are made as to the mechanistic pathways involved.
