We purchased our studio, located in the heart of La Jolla, a casually cool beach town in Southern California, four years ago from a retiring portrait and wedding photographer whose business had wound down. To ramp up our business, we knew we had to make a big impact, fast, on a small budget. Our first marketing effort reached out to local schools for our target market: kids and their families. We immediately sent out letters to the school fundraising committees (PTAs and private support foundations) introducing ourselves and offering our services for special events and fundraising opportunities. Within weeks, we were asked to serve as sponsors of school events and community activities, and the auction item donation requests came pouring in.
